During my last clinic I came to understand that most patients appear to be blissfully unaware of some crucial facts.

If you are UK based here are a few steps to consider for your own protection and for the protection of your loved ones.

1. Go to the nhs website and check you are not listed as an organ donor, simply because you didn’t opt out. Many people are unaware that organ harvesting isn’t performed on dead bodies.

2. Check your U.K. driving licence. On the reverse next to code 12 is a code 115 if you are listed as a donor. This means if you’re incapacitated and unable to speak (perhaps after a RTA or a stroke) then paramedics or police can check your license to confirm if you’re a donor.

It takes less than a week for your license to be returned from DVLA after having 115 removed.

3. Consider creating an Advanced Decision Notice (ADN) listing all medical procedures and drugs/ injections that you do not consent to being given. This document is legally binding and you can keep a copy with your GP or join one of the organisations that retain these records.

After being in ICU for a week during CoV (with pneumonia) and observing what I can only describe as euthanasia, I wear a medic alert bracelet with a link to my established ADN.

4. Many people wrongly assume that next of kin have legal rights. They don’t.

They may be first to be informed of your medical condition and planned treatment but they are unable to prevent you being vented or given medications that you’d never consent to.

5. I’m a participant of a Vaccine Control Group 10-year study.

It’s free to join whatever your status www.vaxcontrolgroup.com
